Podcast
What is a Podcast?
Have you
ever heard about “podcast” before? First mentioned by Ben Hammersley in a 2004 Guardian newspaper
article
in which he rattled off possible names for this booming new medium, the “pod”
of podcast is borrowed from Apple’s “iPod”
digital media player; and the “cast” portion of podcast is taken from
Radio’s “broadcast” term. As a
matter of clarity, just because it’s named after Apple’s iPod, does not
necessarily mean that you have to own or use an iPod — or any portable digital
media player for that matter — to enjoy a podcast.
So, iPod+Broadcast=Podcast
Okay,
with that out of the way, back to the original question: “What’s a podcast?” A
“podcast” is sort of difficult to explain because there really isn’t anything
else like it — but rather, many things that are kind of like it.
However, instead of being broadcast live, a podcast is recorded and then
distributed over the internet, so that you can listen to it whenever you
please. There are thousands of podcasts available, ranging from general
interest entertainment shows to those which focus on specific topics (e.g.
computers / music / education), and not to confuse the issue, podcasting isn’t
confined to just audio but can be video as well.
Each
podcast typically has a website where show episodes can be listened to or
downloaded for future listening. With downloaded media, you can either listen
to it on your computer or take it with you by transferring it to a portable
digital media player or using a podcast app on your phone. So, in this way,
it’s kind of like a small paperback book.
So,
what are the benefits of using “podcast” for us especially English students?
1. Effectiveness
All
participants agree that podcasting is effective for developing one’s English
language skills. According to them, podcasting can effectively enhance the
ability of listening, reading, and speaking. They believe that podcasting is
also effective to improve the mastery of vocabulary and grammar and it is
useful to enhance the ability of pronunciation.
2. Usability
It’s
easy to use this technology. We just type “Learning English + podcast” in
Google and enter. Then click one podcast website and then just click the symbol
or item and play listening or watching. Using podcast for learning just like
play online game.
3. Satisfaction
We
just can learn in our way. We can choose the material, we choose the time,
anywhere, anytime, no pressure, no punishment so it can make study more
enjoyable.
